If you want to make money out of your garage, then you have to first understand that a garage sale is just like any other business. In other words, to make the maximum profits out of the sale, you should first know what to do. You have to know how to advertise, market, and price the items you intend to sell. |
Before starting a garage sale, make sure you find out what are the local municipal laws for a garage sale. If you have to follow certain rules and regulations to hold the sale, it is better to know them beforehand rather than receiving a fine from an inspector because you did not follow the law.
Before having your own garage sale, visit other sales to see what are the types of items being offered and at what price. This will give you an indication how to price the items you want to sell. Make sure you go to these sales early because you will be able to see all the items rather than just the overpriced or useless things that are usually left towards the latter half of the day.
Once you have a fair idea on what price tag to put on various things, check out your garage to see what things you would like to dispose off. Make the items are not broken or useless. Items can be old, but they should be working condition so that people who buy then can put them to use.
The Friday and Saturday before the garage sale should be used to advertise the sale. Make appropriate signs and put them up at intersections on lampposts. Make sure the letters are big enough so that they are visible from a car. In addition, you can put out ads in grocery stores' bulletin boards. You can even put an ad out in the local newspaper under Garage Sale. Do not forget to mention the address so that people can find their way.
Once you finish posting the signs, you should get to pricing the items. Stick the price on all the items using a masking tape. Remember to keep the price reasonable as your main aim is to get rid of things you do not want and to make money in the bargain.
Do not sell any clothing that has been in direct contact with the lower part of your body. It is illegal. Also, do not sell sandwiches, coffee or soft drinks unless the items come sealed. You do not want a lawsuit on your hands in case someone falls sick consuming anything. However, you can offer customers free refreshments.
Make sure that you put all the items neatly on tables long before the sale opens. If people start arriving before all the items are put on display, do not worry too much about it. This means that most of them will wait until you display all the items.
If by noon, most of the items are not sold, then reduce the price by 25 percent. And by 3 p.m. you should be looking to reduce the prices by 50 percent to sell the items. Be flexible on this as you will only make money from your junk if you are willing to reduce the price after a certain time.
In case you are running out of items to sell, you can always close the garage sale early. There is no hard and fast rule that you have to keep it open till the advertised closing time.
