As seen in September 2009, the average salary for a recording artist is around $48,000. Some make an average of $2.37 per hour. However, we see a decline in the demand for recording artists since January 2008. The demand has not picked up in 2009. In fact, it has seen a decrease of about 78 percent. |
For those already established in the business, their earnings can see a significant rise every annum as their demand grows. They also get royalties from every CD sold. Their cut will usually be 10 percent to 15 percent. Those at the very top can even demand 25 percent in royalties. Also, if they give concerts, they can earn a significant amount from a single day’s work.
Also, the artist has to give promotional tours to advertise the recent album. Unfortunately, the artist has to pay for the entire tour out of his royalties. So, that takes a hefty chunk out of the salary. A tour, one can say, is a necessary evil for the artist. He has to do them to make money, but he also loses a part of the money he has made in the process. However, if the tour is a success, it will end up boosting sales.
In addition, the recording artist might want to hire the services of a lawyer to look after his or her interests. That might prove to be expensive again, and might cut the income. However, if you are a rising star, you can benefit a lot from having a lawyer to protect your interests. He will see to it that you get what you deserve plus a few more perks.
